Disclaimer! This review is highly subjective and may contain a little bit of spoiler (I try to minimize it, don't worry).
When I first watch this anime I was rather ecstatic. It’s like finding a harem with appropriate amount of everything. There is enough comedy, enough relationship progress (with enough back stories for a 12 episode anime that consist of lots love candidate). At first this anime became filler for my time waiting for anime like kaguya-sama love is war. As times goes by I grow fond with its character and able to appreciate its plot. I could say that this is one of the rare cases where I don’t hate any of its components. So let’s get started on the review.
Plot : 8/10
Speaking about plot for me HameFura present a rather different plot than the usual harem anime (or any anime in general) it feels original and refreshing. Basically this anime revolve around the MC Katarina Claes as one of noble family in the anime series. The anime focuses on the life of Katarina and all of her effort to avoid her doom ending. In short she was reincarnated in a otome game as a villain. This is where it gets interesting. The plot doesn’t give the MC ‘cheats’ to be popular and ahead of the other character but instead put her in the least favorable conditions and show us how she can overcome such condition by her own effort.
Character : 7/10
I love all of the character and there is progression with the character. But sadly this all shown in early episode where we are shown a scenario when they are young. It’s not like there is no other progress but the progress are too fast pace that it hard to enjoy it naturally. So it kind of a dilemma because for me the early episode give quite a good pace of progress where it became stagnant and later being force too fast. I guess even if it can give the minimum standard of enjoyment, 12 episode is still too little to cover all the character development properly (The light novel do much much better on this)
Progress of story : 7/10
Just like the character progression the story progress also have some kind of rush to it. The slice of life part of the anime’s very enjoyable and probably the charm of hamefura comes between the character interaction (oh how I love every of their interaction) the competitiveness between Geordo and Keith or how sometimes Mary can somehow look like a yandere in plotting against her rival to win Katarina. And how centralize katarina in avoiding her doomed flag to dismiss everything that happened around her (She deserve the named bakarina for a reason). But unfortunately the execution to the story still lacked especially in episode 8 onward. It feel rushed and it impacted to how we value the scene. But not every scene lost its meaning there are still some episode that can make me tear up (And this thanks to how we are made to be attach to the character) yes, speaking directly to episode 11 and 12.
Overall Enjoyment : 7.5
Well at the end I still think of it as anime that deserved 2nd season and definitely will want to see it. The ending was so sweet and not at all making me feels like murdering the MC. I somehow like the idea of Katarina not ending up with anyone because of how valuable every little connection they have. But, also want to see who will be able to sway her ‘dumb’ heart. It will also good if each character have their own alternative ending but who knows we only can wait for the next season to arrive.
